JULIET SALTMAN, EARLY CIVIL RIGHTSLEADER & AKRON  PROFESSOR DIES AT 99

3/27/2022

A talented musician, she would regularly a ferry, train & another ferry
& another train to get to New York City as a young girl for piano
lessons. She attended Rutgers University before marrying William
Saltman; she worked in Philadelphia doing research on race
relations while her husband went to World War 11in the Aleutian
Islands.
Later William took chemistry job in Colorado. One day in Denver a cat followed her oldest son home. They already had a dog, a wire-
haired dachshund, who went ballistic upon seeing this new intruder.
Her son asked if the family could keep the cat. Juliet foresaw
much conflict; she was a lifelong pacifist and an action sociologist.
She acted, with a panache that astounded her children. She took
the dog in one hand and the cat in the other and sat down with
both. She stroked one, then the other, saying, “nice doggie”
then, “nice kitty,” Then she changed to, “ nice kitty” then, “nice
doggie” until both calmed down. ( this practice was probably
repeated for several days ) These animal companions remained
friends for life.

One can read this remarkable obituary in the AKRON BEACON
JOURNAL, Sunday March 13.

The following is the end paragraph:
Julia SALTMAN was an extraordinary organizer, an outstanding
speaker and writer, and beneath it all, an original philosopher.
Once Julie’s children asked her if she believed in God. She
answered, “I believe in love!”

No ray of sunshine is ever lost,

but the green which it awakes

into existence needs time to sprout,

and it is not always granted for

the sower to see the harvest.

All work that is worth anything is done in faith💥

A CASE STUDY IN LOVE AND SELFLESSNESS

Maureen Farris (JLIntern 2006) became a surrogate and gave birth
to rare identical triplets for two Michigan dads. The triplets, Parker,
Robin and Sylvia were born September 9 and are daughters
of two Professors, Kevin and Eric, of Ann Arbor.

How did this come to be? Maureen has been thinking about surrogacy but had not pursued it. When her college friend Cathy
Cherico texted her about a gay couple who wanted a child,
Maureen thought, “ the Universe is working way too quickly but I
need to at least investigate it.” Cathy knew that Maureen had
taken leave of teaching and with husband Jeremiah were
superparents of son Julian.

Maureen explained to Jeremiah “I’m not giving away babies, I’m
babysitting their babies. I’m just helping usher their babies into
this world. Once Jeremiah understood her, he was all in supportive.

The husbands said it was important to use a donor egg—but one
that allowed the child to contact donor mother after age 18.
Both parties used lawyers to put together a contract.
Ultrasound images were labeled Baby A, Baby B and Baby C.
The one fertilized egg implanted in Maureen had split multiple
times, resulting in an extremely rare set of identical triplets.

To the husbands Maureen said, “Your not going to believe how
much I’m going to love your daughters. But it just feels like I’m
their special aunt... “ It still up in the air, but the husbands said they
think the girls will call Maureen “Auntie Mo”

FIRST NATIVE AMERICAN POET LAUREATE APPOINTED FOR THIRDTERM

Joy Harjo is a member of Muskogee Creek Nation and is the
author of nine books including CONFLICT RESOLUTION FOR
HUMAN BEINGS (2015). ATVC is particularly interested in this
work.

For her third term Harjo focuses on her signature project, “Living
Nations, Living Words”. This digital project features an interactive
story map developed with Library of Congress Geography and
Map Division mapping 47 contemporary Native American poets.
The Map connects to a new online audio collection housed in
the AmericanFolklife Center, which features poets reading and
discussing original work.

Harjo says “Poetry has provided doorways for joy, grief and under-
standing in the midst of turmoil and pandemic. The story of
America begins with Native presence, thoughts and words. Poetry
is made of word threads that weave and connect us.”

THE POETRY OF THE VACCINE:A PROJECT LOOKING TO TAP INTO HOPE

My name is Ofelia Zepeda & I am a member of the TOHONO O’ODHAM NATION

Dear VACCINE,

We meet you and shake your hand in greeting.
It has been some time since we shook anyone’s hand.

We are happy to see you,
We have been waiting for your arrival for some time.

Your journey is done, you will now rest in our bodies.
Like other healers before you, you will be there when we need you.

The tale of your journey will be held in our collective stories,
We will tell of the battles you fought on your journey,
The battles against non-believers and conspiracy theorists.

You will be known as a hero, a slayer of enemies
And like so many others before you,
YOU WILL BE KNOWN BY MANY NAMES❣️

ARE YOU AN INTERCESSOR?

7/23/2021

History belongs to the intercessors, who believe the future into
being. The future belongs to whoever can envision in the manifold
of its possibilities a new and desirable possibility, which faith then
fixes upon as inevitable. That is the politics of hope.

Hope envisions its future and then acts as if that future is then
irresistible, thus helping to create the reality for which it belongs.

(The preceding is by Walter Wink in October, 1990. This “Prayer”
was sent to us by regular follower of our ATVC Website)

We think these sentiments still apply. Do you?

SUMMER JOB CUTTING TEACHER’sLAWN STILL GOING FOUR DECADES LATER

The following is taken from THE AKRON BEACON JOURNAL
JUNE 8,2021; It’s a case study in kindness.

”His sewing needed work, but Todd Earle’s yard maintenance
efforts made the grade with his former home economics teacher,
Adele Looney, 98.”

“Looney , who taught home economics for Wadsworth Middle
School, first got to know Earl as a student who had difficulty
threading a needle.”

“Fortunately, his work in other areas of the class were excellent.
But it was the extra credit with a lawnmower that lasted a
lifetime.”

”In the last 10 years, I’ve taken over more of the house stuff.”
Earle said. When I see stuff I point it out to her,”

Looney remembers his difficulties in sewing; Earle rememberS
the first cooking assignment ... the first cooking assignment
was cinnamon toast to learn how to adjust the temperature
of the oven.”

“It’s a memory he and Looney have shared often...as student
and teacher became friends. Earle and Looneys daughter
and son exchange birthday and Christmas cards...Kristi Earle
sees the relationship as a prime example of small town
neighborliness.”
