Joy Harjo is a member of Muskogee Creek Nation and is the
author of nine books including CONFLICT RESOLUTION FOR
HUMAN BEINGS (2015). ATVC is particularly interested in this
work.
For her third term Harjo focuses on her signature project, “Living
Nations, Living Words”. This digital project features an interactive
story map developed with Library of Congress Geography and
Map Division mapping 47 contemporary Native American poets.
The Map connects to a new online audio collection housed in
the AmericanFolklife Center, which features poets reading and
discussing original work.
Harjo says “Poetry has provided doorways for joy, grief and under-
standing in the midst of turmoil and pandemic. The story of
America begins with Native presence, thoughts and words. Poetry
is made of word threads that weave and connect us.”
